Biodanza for Babies
These classes, run by a registered midwife, are designed to offer mothers and their newborns a fun, relaxing and contained space to help with emotional and physical adjustments following their babies’ births.
Classes are designed for babies that are still comfortable in a sling or pouch. Please bring a sling or pouch to class with you.

Biodanza means 'Dance with Life'. It awakens our felt sense. Music and conscious movement encourage us to be present and fully alive. Dance helps us relax and let go of some of the overwhelming chaos that can arise post birth. Classes focus on giving care and attention to ourselves and our babies, who love to be included.
Lisa said:
“It gave me the space to express and explore and connect and move and dance and be centred and feel moments of deep connection with my baby and experience her wisdom and beauty…”

Robyn Sheldon says:
“I work with women, babies and birth as a midwife. I decided after my first class of Biodanza, that teaching it to pregnant couples for use in labour, and to mothers with small babies, would be a wonderful application that would really enhance the work I do.
"I love to watch the unfolding celebration of self and of connection with partners and babies that happens within the Biodanza environment.”
Time out to take a deep breath and settle in the weeks and months after birth. Biodanza dance classes incorporate natural movement to re-connect with our bodies and our babies in a caring and supportive atmosphere. These classes are designed to offer mothers and their newborns a fun, relaxing and contained space to help with emotional and physical adjustments following their babies’ births.
Biodanza is a system of dance devised by Prof. Rolando Toro Araneda from Chile, to reawaken our natural vitality and joie de vivre.

Biodanza Birth Dance
A four week class focusing on:
1. Rhythm for developing a deeper awareness of our bodies
2. Melody for connecting with our partners
3. Harmony for connecting to our instinctual, primal knowing in labour
4. Womb regression for re-parenting and for healing our own birth experiences.
“Life is movement. The more life there is, the more flexibility there is.
The more fluid you are, the more you are alive.”
Arnaud Desjardins
Dance awakens our vitality and life force. Music and conscious movement encourage us to relax into the liminal world of our limbic brains in labour. The less resistance we have to going deep within ourselves and surrendering into our labours, the more likely our bodies are to open to birthing without a struggle.
Birth dance is designed for birthing women and for our partners to teach us to become more embodied and aware of how we feel. Both before and during labour we can use dance to create a safe space of support and nurturing from our partners, which can help our bodies to soften and open. Surrendering into labour can be felt through simply releasing into the feel of music and our body’s rhythmic response to it. Each couple can use these movements in the way that feels most comfortable to them.
We might feel awkward about swaying and moving from a place deep inside ourselves in a labour ward. But this is the natural home of labour. With the advent of epidurals and the high rate of inductions and caesareans, we can become disconnected from the babies who are labouring with us. Trusting that we can be held and supported through labour allows us to maintain a deep connection not only to our bodies but also to our babies throughout their birth.
Birth dance can help us:
- receive and give support from and to our birth partners
- surrender into the intensity of labour
- stay connected with our babies throughout labour
- develop a sensual awareness of our own bodies which helps us to soften
and open up to release our babies gracefully

“A revolution will occur in our vision of violence when the birth process comes to be seen as a critical period in the development of the capacity to love.”Michel Odent
“According to the medical model, life is a problem because it is full of risk and in almost constant danger, an assumption easily accepted if one’s professional career is spent surrounded by pathology, suffering, and death”
Marsden Wagner. MD
